Why Social Media?

Let’s face it, social media platforms have exploded over the last fifteen years, going from 5% of the U.S. adult population using a social media platform, to 72%! We have seen platforms come and go (Myspace) and others that are still ruling the world (Facebook). With so many platforms out there, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out where you should promote your brand.

How do you market to your audience correctly? Who is on each platform. It can be extremely daunting to look at the information sometimes, and try to get your brand out there. However, we did that research for you; we took a look at each of the 9 most popular social media platforms, and got the information that you need to know.

Facebook

Odds are you probably already have a Facebook account.  Facebook is by far the most used social media platform in the United States with roughly 2.6 billion actively using Facebook each month. That means that they are adding 500,00 new users everyday, and about six new profiles every second! These profiles include business profiles as well, is your brand utilizing this platform?

But isn’t just desktop users on Facebook, more than 1 billion of these users are mobile-only users. That means that your content must be optimized for mobile as well as desktop. For this, you should make sure that your font and captions are easily read on all devices so that you don’t lose out on any potential customers.

YouTube

This one might seem a little odd for a social media platform, isn’t YouTube all about viral videos and cat videos? With over two billion monthly active users, YouTube is actually the second most popular platform in the United States. You might have to rethink your content, ultimately you should at least try to get in on the action of YouTube.

Video is unique in marketing your brand because it combines several different elements that your consumers are looking for. Think about when you scroll through your platform feeds, what grabs your attention? Movement. Whether it’s a person explaining something or text, movement will always help catch your eye. 8 out of 10 consumers make a purchase after watching that brand’s video.

Instagram

Instagram is so much more than pictures of your avocado toast, or your favorite hidden coffee spot. Owned by Facebook, Instagram has a cool one billion monthly active users. This is a platform that is 100% aesthetic. You want your content to be eye catching and inviting to make sure that you have the most engagement. That doesn’t mean that you have to have professional photos, but you do want to show your most beautiful content here.

Back in 2013, they introduced videos to the platform which led to the Stories feature in August 2016. Stories are content that will disappear after 24 hours, unless you set it on your Highlight Reel. Brand’s Stories are seen by more than 500 million users daily. That’s a huge amount of users that you could potentially reach!

TikTok

TikTok is more of a newer platform, and it is not for everyone’s marketing strategy. Formerly known as Musical.ly in the U.S. merged with TikTok in 2018. This platform took the internet by storm by combining the use of music and viral hashtag challenges.

This platform is mostly used by people under the age of 25, so if you are thinking about using this for your brand, make sure that you are utilizing it properly. Show your brand’s silly side by using filters or participating in a viral thread to the 800 million active monthly users. As long as you know your audience and are genuine, you can make this platform work for you like the others.

LinkedIn

This platform is fantastic for networking yourself as well as your brand. With roughly 700 millions monthly active users, this niche platform might have you reimagining your normal social media content. Here, you don’t need to worry about posting picture perfect content of viral video challenges. This is where you want to show your brand in a more professional or helpful light.

This platform is still up-and-coming in the United States, only about 9% of users are from the US. But with that amount of people using the platform, 49% make more than $75K annually. Depending on what kind of audience you are trying to target, this platform could help get your brand in front of a niche market.

Pinterest

We all know that Pinterest is a fantastic way to spread your blog or your DIYs, but it can be so much more. Pinterest has more than 367 million monthly users looking for ideas and product reviews.

If your brand can be used for a life event, make sure that you are on this platform! Roughly 85% of women users use this platform to plan life moments such as vacations or weddings. Moreover, these users invest not only time, but also their money. Around 50% of users have spent $500 or more on products they have seen on Pinterest.

Snapchat

If you are looking to reach a younger audience (18-30 year olds) this is a great platform for your brand. Known for the fun filters for gifs that you can add to your videos, Snapchat has a reach of

roughly 350 million monthly users. Brands can utilize this platform for “Brand Takeovers” or even develop filters to be used. Roughly 40% of users discover new brands on Snapchat, are you one of them?

Twitter

There may be some polarizing thoughts about this platform for many, but it is still a very useful platform for many brands. With a reach of 330 millions monthly active users, there are more than 500 millions tweets sent everyday. These users also spend. More than 40% of users carried out a purchase after seeing an add on the platform.

Twitter can be very useful for any brand, if you know how to use it properly.  Hashtags are extremely important on this platform, since you are 100% more likely to get engagement! You should also utilize the use of videos.

Social media platforms are not going anywhere. While some may become more relevant than others, they are here to stay. As a brand, you should learn how to make them work for you. Not every platform is right for every brand, but knowing the basics will help you explore new options and new audiences for your company.
